Every child ends up with one. The toy that gets chosen out of all the others, for reasons nobody can ever quite explain. It goes to bed, to the shops, to the hospital, to grandma's. It gets left behind in a cafe and driven back for at nine at night. This little cotton bunny is made to be that one, soft enough for a newborn to hold and made to survive being loved half to pieces over the years that follow.
Cotton, Soft, and Built for Small Hands
Soft the moment you pick him up, with a natural linen-look cotton body and a face kept deliberately simple. He wears soft grey dungarees, the kind with a little pale blue front pocket and straps that tie at the shoulder, and his ears are long and light at the tips so they flop and fold wherever he is set down. About 35cm tall sitting, and barely any weight to him, the size that tucks under a small arm or into the side pocket of a hospital bag without any fuss.
The face is the part that matters most for the youngest ones. The eyes and nose are stitched felt, not buttons or hard plastic, so there is nothing to work loose and nothing to think twice about the first time he goes straight into a baby's mouth, which he will. Simple, sturdy stitching, made to be gummed, dropped, and washed on repeat.
And he is made in Australia, which is genuinely rare for a soft toy. Most plush is produced offshore in the thousands, and that is exactly the kind of thing that starts to matter the moment you are buying for a baby rather than for yourself.
The One That Ends Up in a Box in the Attic
A toy like this has two lives. The first is loud and constant, carried everywhere, chewed, washed, dropped, and retrieved. He will fade over it. The grey will soften, the linen will go pale where small hands hold him most, and by the end he will look exactly as loved as he actually was.
The second life is quiet. He goes into a box, comes back out at eighteenth birthdays and weddings, and turns a grown adult straight back into a four-year-old for a second. That is the real reason to choose one well at the start. It is the thing that gets kept long after the clothes and the cot and the pram are gone.
Looking after him is simple. A gentle wash and a slow dry out of direct sun keeps the grey looking grey. Treat him as a keepsake from day one, because that is what he quietly becomes.
The Fifteen-Year-Old Test
I bought one of these to photograph for the site, and that was the only reason, or so I told myself at the time. Then Ivy spotted it. Ivy is fifteen, with a phone, firm opinions, and a bedroom I am not allowed into without knocking first. She did not say much. She just quietly took it, and it has been on her pillow every single night since, which I honestly did not see coming from the toughest critic in this house. I keep waiting for the morning she decides she is far too old for a bunny. Still waiting.
Three Reasons the Bunny Goes Out
If He Becomes the Chosen One
Here is the thing nobody tells you when you hand a toy like this over. If he becomes the favourite, and he might, you have just made someone the custodian of the single most important object in a small person's world. That means keeping track of him, and it means the occasional bedtime emergency when he goes missing somewhere between the car and the couch.
The advice every parent works out the hard way is the same: if you can, send two. A quiet backup that rotates through the wash is the whole difference between a calm bedtime and a very long night. It is also why these are priced to make a matching pair an easy call rather than an extravagance.
Lightweight and easy to post, and part of a small range of plush friends made to sit together. We choose them, check each one over, and send them wrapped and ready to give from our Kingscliff studio.
